Madeleine Zayas-Mart, Principal Designer

Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Madeleine is a versatile designer and tenacious problem solver in the areas of green architecture and sustainable urban design. She has been in professional practice since 1993. She has worked extensively with public agencies, cities, non-profit organizations and disenfranchised communities. She has worked for a number of highly regarded firms in the Bay Area, including, Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, Pyatok Architects and WRT/Solomon E.T.C.

Madeleine’s expertise lies in an understanding of building types, street types, parking strategies and their contribution to creating quality public spaces. In her role as Project Director for WRT/Solomon ETC, Madeleine made key contributions to some of the largest architectural and urban design projects in the office including North Richmond Specific Plan, Plan, Sycamore Mixed-Use North and Sycamore Crossings. Prior to working with WRT, Madeleine was an Associate at Pyatok Architects where she designed and managed large urban scale affordable housing and mixed-use projects in the San Francisco Bay Area such as Coliseum Gardens Phase 4, Ocean Avenue Apartments and Wood Street Apartments.

Madeleine’ s unique personal experiences combined with a great enthusiasm for her work allows her to engage well with members of the diverse communities she serves. During her career, she has been successfully involved in design and planning outreach efforts for the Temescal Zoning Update in Oakland, CA, the North Richmond Strategic Plan in North Richmond, CA, the Balboa Park Station Area Plan in San Francisco, CA, the Tongan Community Church in East Palo Alto, CA, the Jordan Downs Master plan for the Housing Authority of Los Angeles, CA, and most recently, the EWEB Riverfront Vision Master Plan in Eugene, Oregon.

She was appointed to the Oakland Planning Commission in 2006 and has been the Chair of the Commission’s Design Review Committee for the last two and a half years, where she has become an expert in the entitlements process. In that role, she has been responsible for advancing the development of city wide urban design guidelines and most recently, a green streets/green infrastructure initiative. She is a visiting lecturer for UC Berkeley’s graduate program in City and Regional Planning and a frequent guest for UC Berkeley’s Master of Urban Design (MUD Program). She has a passion for restoring the fine grain and vitality of inner cities through well integrated master planning, well articulated and thoughtfully designed residential mixed-use development.
